Pod People 04.30.17

Comedy Bang Bang E543: At the end of 2017, Comedy Bang Bang host Scott Aukerman mentioned that CBB would see a transitional period. While people on speculated what that could mean (a new host? the end of the show?), it became abundantly clear that the old set of regular guests were moving out and a new set moving in. This week’s episode marks the 9th Anniversary since the shows beginning, and apart from longtime mainstays Lauren Lapkus and Paul F. Tompkins, is filled with newer names from the past year of shows. As is common on these all-character episodes, guests are eager … Continue reading Pod People 04.30.17

Pod People 4.23.18

Hey folks, before I begin for this week I need to announce that I’ll be taking a break from posting Pod People for awhile, because at my new job I won’t be able to listen to podcasts as consistently, let alone write about them. If someone else would like to take this over, please let me know! Otherwise, this’ll be the last week for Pod People for awhile. Distraction Pieces: Jess Thom – This episode was really interesting, as the interviewee is a comedian with Tourette’s syndrome with both verbal and physical tics who works those into her comedy. She … Continue reading Pod People 4.23.18

Pod People 4.9.18

Not a lot this week, here’s all I’ve got: We Hate Movies Episode 349: Shrek – God, I hate this movie so much. So of course I love hearing it be torn apart by the guys. Unladylike: How to Be a Sex Queen – This guest is so fantastic! She hosts the podcast The Spread and talks openly and often hilariously about sex and everything related to it. We need more podcasts like this! On an unrelated note, I really hate the theme for Unladylike. Luckily it’s easy to skip! Continue reading Pod People 4.9.18

Pod People 3.26.18

RISK: Drugs – I love that this episode had a pretty wide variety of drug-related stories, including a funny one, one that was both funny and harrowing (if you know addiction or have experienced it) and one that was just plain harrowing and heartbreaking. I would have been annoyed if it was nothing but fun stories OR nothing but horror stories. Distraction Pieces with Scroobius Pip: Patrisse Cullors – Cullors has been all over my podcasts because of her book and it makes me so happy. This interview is just as good as the others she’s had recently, and is … Continue reading Pod People 3.26.18

Pod People 3.19.18

Caught: “I Just Want You to Come Home” – This new podcast is about children caught in the criminal “justice” system in America. Picture “The New Jim Crow” in podcast form, told in small stories, with the voices of the kids themselves at the front and center. It isn’t fun listening, but it’s important. The Dollop #319: The Missouri Mormon War – I just read about this in Under the Banner of Heaven! Here Be Monsters #94: The Fatigue of Violence – This episode is just an edited conversation between two private investigators about their jobs, and it’s fascinating and … Continue reading Pod People 3.19.18

Pod People 2.19.2018

Beautiful/Anonymous #99: Sober Mathematician – Awww, I loved this guy’s description of and perspective on AA. It so reflects my own! But don’t worry, this whole episode isn’t just boring sober person talk (y’all get enough of that from me), it’s also just a really great conversation. The Flop House: Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets – Damn, that movie really was straight up garbage. But listening to the Flop House guys tear it apart was great, though I wish they had talked more about just how bad the acting is. Still, this was a fun episode! Continue reading Pod People 2.19.2018

Pod People 1.8.18

Hello folks! While we are back to our regularly Pod People schedule going forward, I don’t actually have any podcasts to feature this week! Which is not to say the podcast offerings were particularly boring, just that I was somewhat distracted due to work, so I wasn’t fully paying attention to most of my podcasts. So instead, I’ll ask some podcast related questions for everyone to answer! What podcasts have you been listening to the longest? What podcasts do you think you’ll listen to until they end or you die, whichever comes first? Which long-running podcasts did you discover late? … Continue reading Pod People 1.8.18

LATE Pod People : The Best of 2017

My apologies for the lateness: I was away from my computer for both of the last two Mondays! We all know that the winner of the Tompkins Award for Best Podcast here on The Avocado was The Adventure Zone, and that is VERY well-deserved. But let’s discuss our other favorite podcasts and podcast episodes of 2017. And looking forward, what podcasts are you looking forward to the return of or just to listening to more of for 2018? Continue reading LATE Pod People : The Best of 2017
