Citations Needed Episode 26: The “Welfare” Dog Whistle – First I’m going to say for more information about how the stereotypes we have around welfare are complete bullshit, listen to the entire first season of The Uncertain Hour from NPR. That said, I love this discussion on why the idea of welfare abuse is a lie sold to us, and how the bullshit serves to keep people down.
By the Book: The Five Love Languages – I loved this. Listening to the two hosts kind of learn to love the idea of using “love languages” to make their relationships better was really sweet and cute, and I love that they both came into it skeptically because I remain skeptical of all self-help books.
This American Life #638: Rom-Com – Because my relationship was one where we had an intense moment of getting (back) together via text, I am a HUGE sucker for these kinds of stories, of people realizing they’re meant to be together and then actually getting together. That being said, I mostly hate rom-coms. They reinforce so many garbage ideas. I really liked that this episode both expressed why people do like them, and why so many of the ideas in them are impractical and don’t happen in real life. It’s not the best This American Life episode ever, but it’s a good one.
