This week, Shazam! Fury of the Gods hits theaters. While I liked the first movie for feeling like an 80’s style kids movie complete with scenes of genuine horror, the film released to a much changed environment. There will be four DCEU movies released this year: Shazam! 2, Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman 2. And yet, with David Zaslav running Warner Discovery and James Gunn given the reins to the universe, it feels like the end of an era. I’m writing this back in January, so assuming I haven’t updated this space yet, it’s likely all of these movies have been cancelled.

It has been a weird, weird trip. It all starts with Man of Steel, which, when it started, we had all assumed was going to cross-over with Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. It turns out it wasn’t, and eventually the whole shebang would be run by Zack Snyder. Until it wasn’t. Then some fans started whining for the Snyder Cut (which they got), a few of the films like Wonder Woman became a critical and box office success, and we both both a Suicide Squad and The Suicide Squad.

Like I said: it was a weird, weird trip.

The DCEU will probably be best known for chasing the MCU and doing it very badly. So,… just like the comics, huh! Anyway, unless things change, we’re probably seeing the end of the road. There will be a new Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. A new… Dawn of Justice?

Bonus prompt: what are your thoughts on the DCEU? Did you have a favorite film?
