  5. Blockers

People like Dwayne Johnson, people like special effects; people went to see Rampage. Despite its arcade cabinet origins, this is the closest thing to a 1950s giant animal movie I’ve ever seen in the theater. Hell yes the army gets called in to fight powers they can neither understand nor contain. Scheming bad guys? You bet! Uncertain cinematography and dialogue that could have used a few more rewrites? Ehhh. 6/10.

A Quiet Place rode a wave of (whispered) praise for a strong second weekend, finishing with $32.6M to Rampage‘s $34.5M. It was down 35% and up 81 theaters. Blockers was down 50% and added 39 theaters.

Truth or Dare, the goofy-looking horror movie I keep seeing ads for in front of YouTube videos, opened in third at 3,000 theaters. Spy thriller Beirut opened in 13th on 755 screens.

Ready Player One lost 54% and sank to fourth, while Black Panther has fallen to sixth. Isle of Dogs added 1,300 theaters and rose three spots, now only $300K behind Blank Panther with an even $5M. Chappaquiddick added 85 theaters but fell 48% to 10th. Amusingly, the other two Entertainment Pictures pictures – this year’s Hurricane Heist and last year’s Hostiles – now sit side by side at 38th and 39th, in eight and seven theaters, respectively.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle finally left theaters this weekend, but The Greatest Showman is still holding on in 23rd.
