Pop Culture Confessions: A Legacy Destroyed

Pop Culture is notorious for its love of sequels. Operating under the theory of “if the first one was really good, then the next five will be too”, sequels and their cousin, spinoffs, either cement a franchise’s legacy (Empire Strikes Back) or burn it to the ground (Zoolander 2).

So this week’s question: What sequel or spinoff almost ruined the original work for you?

It pains me to say it, but Anchorman 2 just about killed my love of the first film. I adored Ron Burgundy, Brian Fantana, Champ Kind and Brick Tamland the first time out, but it was clear from the beginning that the studio thought they could take the formula for the first one (an absurd take on local news), repeat the same jokes on a much larger scale and they’d be good. The problem was it was a mess. The fight scene between the news teams in the second one was too drawn out and was clearly there to cram as many cameos in as possible (I mean, seriously, Harrison Ford as a werewolf?). Even the new material flopped. I love Kristen Wiig, but her “female Brick” character and the romance subplot was just forced. I did eventually watch the original again and, in spite of the sequel, I still enjoyed it immensely, but man, that was a bad taste in my mouth.
