The Monday Politics Thread Demands Another Referendum Vote

Here’s your Monday thread. Boris Johnson, the UK’s answer to “what if we created Donald Trump in our image?” is not having a good week, and it only promises to get worse. Which is both funny to watch, but depressing as well, because this affects far more than just him. Robert Mugabe is finally dead. Like Francisco Franco, Mugabe has finally left this mortal coil, and not a moment too soon. Good riddance. Hong Kong is still a mess. I don’t think this will end well. The Monday Politics Thread is Appointing a Delegate to the House of Representatives

The Cherokee Nation is stepping up. The Cherokee Nation announced Thursday that it intends to appoint a delegate to the US House of Representatives, asserting for the first time a right promised to the tribe in a nearly 200-year-old treaty with the federal government. I hope they kick down the front door and walk in, daring anyone to stop them. It would be epic and amazing. Also, this : I mean, if there’s a better place to use this meme in the PT, I don’t know where that is. The Monday Politics Thread is a Government Employee Today

I honestly haven’t kept up much with the political this weekend; I’ve been preparing and waiting for today, because Monday, August 19th, is my first working day as an actual government employee, sucking up all of your tax dollars while I sit and do nothing.  Or so I’ve heard.  I assume I’ll get my big fat check as soon as I walk in the door. It’s the start of a new week!  I assume it will suck as it usually does, though perhaps Trump will offer to buy Antarctica this time, because Greenland is off the table. The Monday Politics Thread Demands a Resignation

So, as you may have heard, Puerto Rico is having a bit of a crisis. You can see it on Twitter, #rickyrenuncia, as people protest the sexist, homophobic remarks of the governor of Puerto Rico. In Hong Kong, protestors are marching for democracy, against a Chinese government trying to corral a city that knew freedom for decades before being handed back. This may not go well. It’s Monday! Remember, this is the Avocado. We have standards here. Sexism, racism, derogatory comments of people’s appearances, and religious intolerance are not allowed. Throw up the Mod Signal if you need to. Continue reading The Monday Politics Thread Demands a Resignation

The Monday Politics Thread Has Nothing to Say

What else is there to say after our Vice President went to a concentration camp in the US of A in the year of our Spaghetti Lord 2019? There really is nothing anymore. So, instead, donate to RAICES. You can use PayPal, you can donate a portion when taking Lyft, and you can donate through AmazonSmile when making purchases. Continue reading The Monday Politics Thread Has Nothing to Say

The Monday Politics Thread Disputes the Term “Concentration Camp”

Or rather, disputes the dispute, because screw that shit, they’re goddamn concentration camps. The Salt Lake Tribune’s editorial board on Saturday came to the defense of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), arguing it’s correct to call the Trump administration’s migrant detention facilities “concentration camps.” “They are not work camps. They are not death camps. At least, not on purpose,” the board wrote. “Our government is not building massive gas chambers and industrial crematoria. It is not conducting sick medical experiments on members of an unfavored class.” “But that does not mean that the places into which we are herding tens of thousands … Continue reading The Monday Politics Thread Disputes the Term “Concentration Camp”

The Monday Politics Thread is an Ally

It’s June, and it’s Pride. Stonewall was 50 years ago, and same sex marriage was only legalized in the US in 2015. It’s still legal to fire someone for being transgender in 30 states, and to fire someone for being gay in 28. This needs to change. Welcome back to Monday. Let’s see how far Trump can tank the stock market this week. Continue reading The Monday Politics Thread is an Ally

The Monday Politics Thread Has Off for Memorial Day

It’s Memorial Day in the US, which is basically our Remembrance Day, except with more shopping. So. Much. Shopping. In other news, as we all know, Theresa May finally gave up, gave everyone in the UK the metaphorical finger, dropped the mic, and exited stage right. (In two weeks, anyway.) Not knowing how the UK works when it comes to these things, I can only assume May’s successor must win a trial by bloody combat, eating the smallest in Parliament to prove their dominance, and bring the Queen the head of a Leprechaun. It’s Monday, and the European elections happened … Continue reading The Monday Politics Thread Has Off for Memorial Day
