This week’s discussion prompt: What is the best “new-to-you” music you discovered in 2024 that was NOT released in 2024? 

While I’ve made a number of great non-2024 musical discoveries this year – and even devoted OT headers to a couple of them – as far as things I discovered this year that I’m surprised I didn’t find out about a lot sooner, I’ve gotta go with Gizmodgery, the fourth album by a band called sElf that came out in the year 2000! Pretty sure it was thanks to The Avocado’s very own Nudeviking posting “Trunk Fulla Amps” somewhere on this site earlier in the year. Apparently the entire album was recorded using children’s toy instruments; I’m really surprised I managed to miss out on this the first time around, as not only is this very much my kind of thing, it also would have fit in perfectly with what I was listening to around the turn of the century. But as is usually the case, better to discover something good too late than to never discover it at all!
