It’s December 14, 2022. On this day, I took over Wednesday PT headers and started by looking back at PTs and Avocado threads of years past. And so I decided to write a PT header for a year from now looking back at this particular day, and ask some questions that will hopefully be answered a year from now. Hopefully with positive answers.
Over in the Politics Thread, Donald Trump teased some announcement by saying America needs a superhero. What the hell was that about? Is this going to be a big deal that shakes politics? Or is it a nothingburger? And what will have happened with special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation and the House 1/6 panel? Will Trump still be skirting the law? Will DeSantis still be ascendant? I hate that we’re still thinking about Trump in 2022, and hopefully in 2023 he’ll be a little further in the rearview mirror.
Also in the PT, there’s a lot of conversation about Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter. He keeps firing people, keeps trying to cut costs, and just got booed at a Dave Chapelle standup gig and is handling it as he does by lashing out and blaming the “woke.” Tesla’s stock has taken a dip, currently trading at $156.50. Is Twitter still a thing? Have we stopped relying on it in the PT? Has Musk suffered further humiliation? Or even some consequences? How’s Tesla doing?
On December 14, we were celebrating Warnock’s runoff victory, and bemoaning Kyrsten Sinema switching her party affiliation to independent. I expect we’ll all still be groaning at Sinema when this post goes live. But maybe the Democrats will become more aggressive. Maybe the Republicans will devolve into further infighting – as I’m writing this, there are still a lot of Republican House members vowing that Kevin McCarthy will not be made Speaker. I’m not entirely optimistic, but I hope I’ll look back on this post once it goes live and be pleasantly surprised.
Meanwhile, elsewhere on The Avocado we had a thread on mandatory holiday fun in the office, a director profile of David Lynch, a WTF Asia on Badhaai Do, and over at the Comic Strip Club we’re continuing a miserable Mary Worth storyline about dating someone who looks like your former babysitter and surely it won’t get dumber, right?
It’s been a tough year for me, and I know it has for many others on The Avocado. I hope that when this post goes live in 2023, it’s been a better year for all of us – personally, professionally, politically, physically, emotionally – and that maybe you can look back at how things were a year ago and think “things are going well.”
Also I’m really curious if The Avocado lets me actually schedule a post a year in advance, or else this could be real awkward.
