I’ve created a thread to chat about the 2019 WNBA playoffs
The Single Elimination Games are done and now we get to the multi-game Semifinals. The Semifinals are a Best-of-Five series between the winners of the second round elimination games and the 1 and 2 seeds. The top two seeds, The Washington Mystics and Connecticut Sun respectively, have had byes in the first two rounds, and are finally in action for the playoffs
(2) Connecticut Sun vs (3) Los Angeles Sparks
The Sun started out the season on an absolute tear, going 11-2 in the first 13 games, thanks mostly to all-star Jonquel Jones. Then they began to crack; losing five straight games, the nadir being routed 102-59 by the Mystics. They righted themselves somewhat, but have never really looked like the dominate team they were in the beginning of the season. They also started to struggle in the last few games, so it’s yet to be seen if the long byes will hurt them or help the team get back into the sing if things
The Sparks, in their fourth semifinals in five years, arrive to the semifinals after defeating the Seattle Storm 92-69 in their Second Round Game. Led by Chelsea Gray, they looked strong overall in the win over the Storm. This looks to be a tough series for both teams
The Sparks led the season series over the Sun 2-1
(1) Washington Mystics vs (4) Las Vegas Aces
The Washington Mystics had an historic season in 2019; one in which they set all sorts of franchise and WNBA records, . Led by Elena Delle Donne, Mystics were completely dominant all season. EDD, all but certain to be the 2019 MVP, herself had an historic season in which she became the first player in WNBA history with 50% from the field, 40% from the three point range and 90% from the free throw line. She missed a few games this season after a broken nose, since the injury she has worn a face mask, but if she can stay healthy, the Mystics look almost unbeatable
The Aces won their elimination game against the Sky, the franchise’s first playoff win, in dramatic fashion thanks to Dearica Hamby’s amazing steal and long-shot with seconds left. The question now is: can the Aces contain the offensive powerhouse that is the Mystics?
The Mystics took the regular season 2-1
