Sports Corner – May 8, 2019

Amidst the big events of this month, there were two stories that didn’t get a ton of coverage but that I feel deserve more notice:

– The decision by over 200 professional women’s hockey players to skip the upcoming season in the NWHL to protest terrible wages and treatment, and to push for the creation of a new, better women’s professional league.

– The ruling that runner Caster Semenya apparently has too much natural testosterone in her body and should be made to take drugs to lower it before she can compete again.

Both are stories that show the difficulties women face in the sporting world in receiving fair treatment (and it seems clear to me that Semenya is also the victim of racism). I of course am not the best person to lead a discussion on the subject, being male and white.  But these are things worthy of discussion as much as who won the Derby, where Kyrie will be playing next season, and what’s wrong with the Nats.  And perhaps more important.
