MLB News

• MLB handed out another major drug suspension this week, with Cubs pitching prospect Oscar De La Cruz being hit with an 80 game suspension. He’s been struggling in his first taste of AA ball in 2018 but was considered a top five prospect in the Cubs system after a dominant showing in High A last season. Given the length of his suspension there won’t be much of a season left for him to play in to try and work out the issues he’d been having thus far.

• Back in 2016, Mets relief pitcher Jenrry Mejia was banned from Major League Baseball following a third failure of a drug test. However, after two years a banned player is allowed to apply for reinstatement and this week MLB announced the ban would be lifted, effective spring training of 2019. Mejia will be allowed to start working out at Mets facilities after the All-Star break this season in preparation for spring training. Mejia has pitched in both Mexican and Venezuelan winter leagues over the past couple seasons to mixed results, but is only 28 years old and showed himself to be a quality major league reliever during his previous stint in the majors (including working as the Mets closer for a time). Assuming the Mets tender him a contract for 2019 he could be a big weapon to add to their bullpen next year.

• We’re in July now, with the trading deadline just about 3 weeks away and the All-Star Break, baseball’s unofficial mid-season marking point in about a week. And the (presumed) big prize of the season is almost certainly Manny Machado of the Orioles (who will be a free agent at the end of the season). Reportedly seven teams have already pitched offers to the Orioles (and several hours “checking in”), with the Dodgers and Brewers reportedly in the lead while the Indians are also in the mix. Machado has a .936 OPS right now with 21 home runs and 60 RBI so any offense that acquires him will be adding a potent weapon.

• Sunday against the Tigers, Texas Ranger outfielder Shin-Soo Choo reached base for the 47th straight game, breaking the Rangers franchise record of 46 set by Julio Franco in 1993. The all-time major league record is currently 84, set by Red Sox Hall of Famer Ted Williams in 1949. The last time a player reached a streak as long as Choo’s was 2002 when Kevin Millar would reach base 52 times as a member of the Orioles.
