The Thursday Politics Thread Didn’t Hear No Bell

This has been a rough week. I won’t pretend otherwise. On the one hand, we are dealing with an embarrassingly corrupt and inept administration, but also one that’s needlessly cruel and dangerous. It is being shamelessly encouraged by its enablers in Congress and by the conservative political sphere and the effects of it’s policies will leave a mark upon this country for a generation. The string of decisions before the end of SCOTUS’ term and the subsequent retirement of Anthony Kennedy speak volumes. But even for all of the hits we’re taking, there’s still some good in the world. Rocky didn’t hear no bell and neither do we.

I remember once in college an argument about participation in democracy. The central question was what precisely is participation? Is it just voting? Nah, can’t just be voting since voting is more the end result of discussions we have in society. Participation is about making your voice heard one way or another. It’s through voting, or protesting, or calling your representatives, or all of the above. The only way for you to not participate is to take no action.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez trounced her incumbent opponent, Joe Crowley on Tuesday. Voting works. voting matters. Make your voices heard. Calling your representatives killed several versions of Trump’s shitty healthcare plan. Protesting the Travel Ban engaged other parts of society to resist the sinister forces at work.

No matter what gets thrown in our faces, keep moving forward. We can take back this country. There are still children imprisoned at the border, being held hostage unless parents agree to dismiss their asylum claims. There’s still no guarantee these kids will ever see their families again. SCOTUS sided with the administration in the Travel Ban to defend the President constitutional authority, without considering the context. Unions are on the verge of collapsing upon themselves now. Racially gerrymandered districts is being permitted despite the decision of every other court.

This is not the time to be sad. Get angry, stay angry.

June 30th Families Belong Together protests across the country.

Think that Mitch McConnell is an evil turtle what gets off on being a hypocritical, hyperpartisan ass? Call your senators and insist on his Standard: no consideration of Supreme Court justices until after the election & the new Congress is seated.
