MLB News

• You might remember the story of White Sox reliever Danny Farquhar who passed out in the dugout during a game a few weeks ago and was subsequently diagnosed with a ruptured brain aneurysm. This past week he returned to the baseball diamond to throw out the first pitch to thunderous applause alongside his family, teammates, and the medical staff who treated him.

• It’s been a long time since expansion happened in MLB, 1998 to be precise when the Rays and Diamondbacks joined the league. Commissioner Rob Manfred has openly pined for the league to expand to 32 teams though and the Portland Diamond Project is becoming very serious in their efforts to bring a major league team to Portland, Oregon. The city has submitted bids to convince first the Expos in 2003 and the Marlins in 2007 to move to their city. Now the Project has submitted bids on 2 locations within Portland that they say could house a 32,000 seat MLB stadium. What do you think? Can MLB support two additional teams? Where should they go?

• Jake Peavy hasn’t pitched since a mediocre showing in 2016 with the Giants. The 37 year old took the year off in 2017 for personal reasons but has been reportedly keeping in shape, regularly throwing bullpen sessions and says he feels great and that he could be a useful arm in the second half for a team. Sometime later this month he plans to hold a private workout for interested teams, if someone is impressed he’ll likely be offered an incentive laden minor league contract.

• Yankees manager Aaron Boone and his team are not very happy about one of the decisions MLB just made for his team. July 9 the Yanks are currently schedule to play a doubleheader with the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. The day before that the Yankees are playing in Toronto, a game that was recently changed from a 1:05 PM start to ESPN’s Sunday night broadcast. Meaning the Yankees will play roughly 3 games over the course of 30 hours with a red-eye flight in between the first 2 games. And I can’t say I blame them. The MLB Player’s Association is currently looking into trying to force MLB to move the game back to an afternoon start.
