YOUR BOX OFFICE NUMBERS (from Box Office Mojo)
- Pacific Rim Uprising
- Black Panther
- I Can Only Imagine
- Sherlock Gnomes
- Tomb Raider
Black Panther was finally unseated from #1, but has overtaken The Avengers as the all-time domestic #5. Newcomer Pacific Rim Uprising beat expectations (and reviews) to open with $28M across 3,700 screens.
Not in an action mood? “Go fuck yourself,” says the cineplex, and offers Sherlock Gnomes, opening at #4. Or maybe you’d like Midnight Sun, which opened in 10th and got a review in the old country that can be summed up as “Uuuuugh.”
Still not satisfied? How about some Christianity with your popcorn. I Can Only Imagine hangs on in third, a modest 19% drop cushioned by the addition of 624 theaters. And there’s Paul, Apostle of Christ, which opened in eighth on just under 1,500 screens.
Unsane opened at #11 on the shallow end of a wide release, with 2,000 screens. Isle of Dogs opened at #15 in 27 theaters, leading me to ask why we can’t all just have the good movies the opening weekend, screw your word-of-mouth buildup.
Also, I went to see Game Night this weekend. It was good, but I have no idea how it cost $60M to make.
