YOUR BOX OFFICE NUMBERS (from Box Office Mojo)
- Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
- 12 Strong
- Den of Thieves
- The Post
- The Greatest Showman
Now in its fifth week – and third at #1 – Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has overtaken Thor: Ragnarok (still on the chart at #27) in total gross, $317M to $313M. That’s the second-highest cumulative take for a current film, behind The Last Jedi‘s $604M. This is remarkable for a movie that more or less came out of nowhere and is a sequel to a film that didn’t need one. Fingers crossed for Zathura 2.
Second place went to 12 Strong, a war drama about American horse-mounted soldiers in Afghanistan (the Wikipedia page never uses the word “cavalry.”) Den of Thieves, a heist thriller led by Geostorm star Gerard Butler, got a begrudgingly positive review back in the old country and opened in third.
After a big bump last week, The Post fell back to fourth. Avocado favorite Paddington 2 is down 25% but actually climbed a spot, from sixth to seventh. The Last Jedi dropped two more places, and spent its sixth week in eighth.
Forever My Girl opened in tenth. Per Wikipedia, Forever “follows a country music superstar (Alex Roe) who sets out to win over the girl he left at the altar eight years before (Jessica Rothe)” and “received negative reviews from critics.” Box Office Mojo has its listed budget as $3.5M, which would be low even for a horror movie. On the plus side, Forever‘s $4.7M take means it’s probably well on the way to making its money back.
Mary and the Witch’s Flower opened at #26 on 161 screens. It’s the debut film by Studio Ponoc, founded by former Studio Ghibli staff. The last new film this weekend, the documentary Kangaroo, opened in 39th on two screens.
