Morning Politocadoes!
The Republican strategy for the 2018 midterms has been a curious one. After a spate of special elections that have demonstrated a re-energized left and a dissatisfied voter base, several GOP congressmen have opted to not seek re-election for the 2018 cycle. The most recent of which were Darrell Issa and Ed Royce of California (who would be losing their leadership posts anyways, to be fair). At present, 29 seats held by the GOP will be open in 2018. 2006 saw 22 and the 1994 “Republican Revolution” that brought us Newt Gingrich saw 27 Democratic retirements. All signs point to them seeing a significant change in the House.
Welcome to Thursday!
