Public Domain Theater: One-Eyed Jacks (& The Phantom Empire)

Welcome to Public Domain Theater, your home for the wonderful world of films that have (in the United States, at least) fallen into the public domain, and are free for everyone to see!

Well, howdy, lil’ doggies! It’s a Western roundup this month, here at the ol’ Public Domain Theater ranch.

Our feature presentation is humdinger this go ’round! Starrin’ and directed by a fella’ I reckon y’all have heard of, name of Marlon Brando. Yessir, it’s One-Eyed Jacks! Tells a yarn ’bout two outlaws – one who’s gone straight, even become a lawman hisself, and the other who’s still every inch the bandido, and wants revenge on the first fella’ for goin’ turncout on ‘im some years back.

It’s a picture show full of love and hate and tragedy and excitement, and makes for a right powerful story, I do declare. Mighty heavy viewin’, though, so if’n y’all’s lookin’ for the lighter side of the Old West … well, I reckon our openin’ short should do ya just fine.

It ain’t no cartoon this go ’round, but the first chapter in one a them there film serials, The Phantom Empire. This first chapter’s got isself the title “The Singing Cowboy”, and dang if it ain’t give ya just that. That cowboy, well, he’s Gene Autry – a fella’ got hisself a lease to Radio Ranch, but only so longs as he does his radio show from there each day, come hell or high water.

Trouble gets to brewin’ when some crooked types (from back East, I reckon) figure there’s uranium on the land, and decide to drive ol’ Gene out so’s they can take it for their selves. But they’s weren’t countin’ on Gene bein’ a tough son of a gun, or on there bein’ kiddies from the Thunder Riders Club itchin’ to save Radio Ranch. Or on there bein’ an underground civilization lookin’ to kill them all with death rays and robots.

…

…

Yeah, ya heard me! This serial’s been into the strong hooch, ya ask me.

Well, we ain’t claimin’ to please everyone here ’round Public Domain Theater, but if’n Brando or Autry sounds like your kinda cowboy, why not saddle up and mosey on down to see what the public domain’s got prepared for ya?
