I mostly take wildlife photos, but have been recently taking pictures of many other things. This week: Old Gravestones in Little Compton, Rhode Island. I generally take nature pictures, but my other photography passion is the Colonial/Revolutionary era cemeteries across New England (and beyond) One of my favorite cemeteries to photograph is Rhode Island Historical Cemetery – Little Compton #12: Old Common Burial Ground. This graveyard is located next to the Congregational Church of Little Compton and contains some of the oldest well-preserved and intact gravestone in the state outside of Providence or Newport( Little Compton and the surrounding area were part of the Plymouth/Massachusetts colony until 1746). There are excellent examples of the symbolism and artistry that adorn New England gravestones of the era. Many of the stones were carved by famed caver John Stevens or his son and grandson( both of whom were also named John) Almost every stone has an amazing, more often than not completely bonkers even for today’s age, story behind it. Here are just a few of some of the beautiful headstones of those that lie buried within.
