News and Results
- The Philadelphia Waterdogs are your Premier Lacrosse League champions! They beat the Denver Outlaws 14-4 on Sunday afternoon to lift the trophy. Of note is Philadelphia star and league MVP CJ Kirst, who not only scored 7 points in the final, but is also a key part of the indoor NLL champions the Toronto Rock (of Hamilton.) He has won lacrosse!
- You don’t get that many genuine grudge matches in sports these days, but we saw one in college football this weekend when Lane Kiffin’s LSU came to Ole Miss, the school he abandoned in the midst of a playoff run. Ole Miss came out the winners, fending off a late comeback. Elsewhere, top 10-ranked Texas A&M suffered a shock defeat as they were roundly beaten by Kentucky.
- It was a big weekend for rivalries in soccer, leading into a super-sized international break. Atletico Madrid defeated star-studded Real Madrid 2-1, with a penalty and a goal from Jonathan David. Paris St. Germain beat Lille in “El Classique”, Rangers defeated Celtic in what was described as a poor quality Old Firm derby, and Club America and Chivas drew 2-2 in Mexico’s biggest matchup.
- Beneath all the glitz and soap opera, the NFL is a brutal sport, and that was certainly on display during the games yesterday. Exciting Chicago quarterback Caleb Williams was carted out of the game with a right hamstring injury. Washington also saw their quarterback Jayden Daniels suffer a gruesome dislocated elbow, while Green Bay lost wide receiver Jayden Reed.
- The FIA cancelled its Rally Saudi Arabia event, sent to be hosted in November in Jeddah, due to *gestures at PT.* This would seem to bode ill for the two season-ending Formula 1 races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, and the whole broader trend of Middle Eastern oil powers buying up all the sports.
- Joshua Van defended his UFC flyweight title in Los Angeles, finally getting a decisive victory over Alexandre Pantoja, who he initially took the title from after a freak injury. Between this and his fight with Tatsuhiro Taira, Van has had two of the most exciting fights of the year, and at just 24 years old is a real emerging star. Elsewhere on the card, Arman Tsarukyan cemented his lightweight #1 contender status with a knockout of Mauricio Ruffy, and -2500 favourite and accused rapist Gable Steveson suffered one of the biggest upsets of the year, being knocked out by underdog Sean Sharaf. You really do love to see it.
