Those of you who’d like to post future Creative Endeavors Threads post your request in the comments below. Hey, Kevzero here, I’m an amateur photographer based on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. I mostly take wildlife photos, but have been recently taking pictures of many other things. This week: Monarchs! It’s late summer and that means the Monarch butterflies are gearing up to head back down south. Monarch migration in North America begins in the groves of central Mexico during the Spring. They then will travel about halfway to their destination to mate and stay there until their offspring are ready to complete the journey to the Northeast US or Southern Canada. The original migrants stay at the halfway points and live out the rest of their lives. The children complete the flight to the northern migration spots; including here on Cape Cod, and hand around the area throughout the Summer. This generation of Monarchs then themselves mate and until their children are ready to return home. This third generation of Monarchs, grandchildren of the original migrants, will complete the journey back home to Mexico single-handedly while their parents remain up north to live out the rest of their lives. Once back in Mexico, the cycle begins anew come next Spring. Here are some recent pictures of Monarch from around Southern New England.
