• Contrary to prior reports, the NBA did hand down a punishment for the LA Clippers cap circumvention scandal, and it’s a doozy. The team will lose five first-round draft picks and pay a $30 million fine, with owner Steve Ballmer and president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank receiving suspensions. Kawhi Leonard got off relatively light with a $700, 000 fine. Most importantly, his contract was not voided, which means he can still be traded to the Toronto Raptors.
• Cathy Engelbert has announced that she will be retiring as WNBA Comissioner at the end of the year. Cathy’s tenure has seen the league’s popularity boom with the addition of Caitlin Clark and numerous expansion teams, but she also alienated many players with brusque communication during the recent labour negotiations (even moreso than is necessary for a boss in these negotiations) and general passivity during right-wing hate campaigns aimed at the league. She was put in a bad situation to some extent, but also handled it ineptly, so say goodbye to the Commissioner Billings of the WNBA.
• I could continue with the trend of nasty legal stories into college football by talking about LSU’s battle with the SEC to play, or the apparent looming scandal around UNC, but instead I’d like to focus on the best part of NCAA sports, which is really funny upsets. The UMass Minutemen, which have been considered the worst team in FBS in recent years and were a +2500 underdog, came into New Jersey and beat the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in a dominant 37-21 showing. Let’s go Minutemen!
