Supergirl Ain’t Super — Weekend Box Office Report for June 26th-June 28th, 2026

Insert kryptonite joke of your choosing here, because Supergirl ain’t taking off. Let the finger-pointing commence.

Yes, Kara Zor-El was no match for the combined strength of Woody and Buzz Lightyear (well, and Jessie too, since she’s really the main character this time), as Toy Story 5 is our number one flick this weekend with a healthy $70 million. Naysayers will be quick to point out it’s not nearly as leggy as Inside Out 2 despite opening within the same range, but c’mon. We’re talking about a franchise that is older than a lot of the people reading this. Toy Story might be long in the tooth, but people continue to love these characters enough to pay to revisit them again every couple of years. It might be the weakest in the series, but hey, even the smallest donut in the box is still going to taste good. Toy Story 5 is also easily going to beat Toy Story 3 stateside and might even make it past Toy Story 4‘s $434 million total. Worldwide, it’s a lock for $1 billion. Nothing to complain about here.

There is plenty to complain about–even if DC publicly tries to downplay it–regarding Supergirl, which opened lower than The Marvels and even fucking Morbius (which wasn’t quite the mega-flop you probably think it is). Hell, when actuals come in, Supergirl might wind up below the premiere of fucking Joker 2. To use the word Kara says about fifty times in the movie, “shit.”

What went wrong? From the moment its first teaser was released last Christmas, it was clear Supergirl was going to be a hard sell with mainstream audiences, who probably expected it to be bright, colorful, and set in Metropolis (and also, you know, Supergirl not waiting until the climax to put on her costume). Instead it looked grungy, edgy, and violent (although tonally it’s not nearly as dark as some critics are claiming). “The villain is like a Mad Max bad guy” is not a sentence people usually read in a review for a film like this. Also, unlike last year’s Superman–which was sold heavily to families–Supergirl seemed to be trying to scare parents off with a main character who was a disheveled alcoholic. Sure, I might laugh when Kara falls asleep hungover while using the toilet, but will mom and dad?

Is Supergirl a terrible movie? No. Is it a fantastic movie? Also no. It’s “fine,” which is fine for me, but isn’t going to give it the word-of-mouth boost needed to save it from Krypton’s fate. Supergirl supposedly had at least eight test screenings, resulting in reshoots which may or may not have been ghost directed by James Gunn. In other words, Warner Bros. knew they were in trouble long before these underwhelming numbers came in. Next up for the DCU is Clayface in October, which is an R-rated horror-style movie and reportedly low budget.

And speaking of low budget, Jackass: Best & Last might look like a disappointment at first glance, but this is, at the end of the day, more or less a glorified clip show. It’s really just a goodbye to the series made specifically for longtime fans. So it’s doing okay for what it is.
