Hey look, there’s some actual new games to play this week! I’m so gosh darn excited to play The Adventures of Elliot, I just wish the Switch 2 version wasn’t one of those stupid key cards; guess I’m picking up the PS5 physical copy.

You’ll have to research the rest on your own, I’m afraid. I spent the last weekend getting some much needed R&R up in the mountain town of Julian, CA, where I ate some incredible apple pie and bought a copy of Shakespeare in Love on DVD.

Everything else:

Notable Releases from 10, 20, and 30 (and sometimes 40) years ago:

No major commentary this week, just want to say that Mighty No. 9 is terrible, Final Doom came out when I was at Summer camp so I never got to play it, and I’m sure Jarathan is hella excited that The Legend of Heroes II is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Rygar hit arcades in 1986 and had all of saying “Wow, what’s a Rygar?“.

In movies, Warcraft is better than you’ve heard, but it’s not all that great. Nacho Libre is as good as you remember it, assuming you remember it being fucking awesome (which I do). Similarly, The Cable Guy is both highly underrated and a little overrated. I don’t think it deserves to be regarded as one of the worst movies of the 90’s (as some critics and fans will have you believe) but I also don’t think it’s a masterpiece of dark comedy, either. It’s funny, but it’s a little tedious and just a twinge pretentious. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, on the other hand, is arguably the greatest comedy to come out of the 1980’s. John Hughes really found his footing here as both a writer and director, giving us one incredible film that has stood the test of time.

In music, Mitski’s Puberty 2 is probably really good if you were in college in 2016. Define the Great Line is an album from the Christian hardcore band Underoath; do you need more info? Odelay from Beck is, without a doubt, one of the greatest albums of all-time. This bizarre mish-mash of styles is one of the defining records of the 1990’s, with brilliant classics like “Where It’s At” and “The New Pollution”. From 1986, Madonna’s True Blue, her third album, saw the singer continue to court controversy with her revealing outfits and religious iconography. The single “Papa Don’t Preach” was huge for Madonna, as was my favorite song on the album, “Open Your Heart”. Both are solid classics that will kill at your next 1980’s themed party.
