Taking somewhat drastic steps to counter the Stardew Valley situation. I thought I could roll it into my regular routine, but I realized that my main issue is that my playing basically soaks up all the creative energy I used to expend on my own artwork. While this was a fundamental breakthrough in experiencing video games as an artform… this ain’t working. So at some point in the next few days I’ll be taking my gaming controller to the storage unit and leaving it there until Labor Day or maybe even Halloween. It’s only one centerpiece of a surprisingly hectic few days off—I’m going to the Detroit Tigers game on Thursday, attending an employment-related function Wednesday that I only found out about this weekend and which is making me kinda nervous, and last but not least going to another sketch session at Dzanc House in Ypsilanti (and maybe another one in Detroit after the game).

I went to my first one since December a couple of weeks ago as my beginning Spanish class ended, and it was good not only to see some familiar faces but also to flex those muscles again. It was interesting, too, to catch up on some of the gossip as well as the first time I’ve ever heard my own concerns about class divisions in who gets to sell and consume art voiced by others unbidden (more on this in another post, maybe, but it has to do with working weekends, among other things). I also went to a drink-and-draw just down the road a week later, where there aired a few other topics that had long preoccupied me; this stuff couldn’t be more timely if I’d actually made it happen. Last but not least, I found a spot in front of our house where I can sit and draw (or maybe even paint). I might have hit on it sooner, but I was, uh, playing video games. So things are moving, but with little to show yet. Been here before.

How’s your work going?
