The Avocado Weekly Movie Thread (05/05)

Moviacados! Yesterday as it turns out was May the 4th and if my calculations are correct this would make today May the 5th. However it is the 4th that I am more interested in this time (we can settle debate of whether or not it is Revenge of the 5th or 6th at a later date), as it is a day that was born out of a movie pun and has caught on culturally to become a full on thing. People laugh at the title but still talk Star Wars, show off their Star Wars and if you give them some money they may even go see a Star War. It has now full on moved into the real world as a way of celebrating a movie franchise…. well not so much just movies anymore of course, but that is where it started, particularly the phrase “May the 4th… ahem force be with you”.

And this is not just limited to Star Wars, other movies have had dates that have moved over to the real world as a means for fans of that movie/franchise to go out and celebrate their fandom/thing. Sometimes it is a recurring day as it gives you the day and the month of the movie event a la Rex Manning day, or other times it is a one and done only as the event only happens once as this time a year is attached. Most often the latter has to do with sci-fi or time travel movies as the year is sometime in the future and the event is when the real world date eventually catches up with the event from the fictional movie. Either way eventually movies can actually jump off the screen and into the real world and cause us to celebrate our love of cinema with other like minded fans and that is pretty cool (not as cool as Superman damaging the real world KKK, but that is a story for another forum).

I am trying to be somewhat minimalistic with my responses as to allow for prompt responses but this weeks prompt is pretty simple: What is your favourite movie(s) that inspired real-life holiday/celebrations? Not related too much but I really think Disney let a pretty good opportunity to put the Mandalorian movie out this past weekend and have it released on the May the 4th week, since they traditionally owned the first week of May with Marvel movies and there is no Marvel release this year it just seems odd to me that they would pass on the synergy. Anyway, enjoy!
