Very happy to report that there’s been considerable movement on some of my earlier stated resolutions and some longstanding initiatives. While I still wish there was more actual work being done, one silver lining of my junior-gamer lassitude has been a renewed attention to some of this infrastructural stuff I’ve had a bad habit of setting aside. For one thing, I finally updated my website!
This wasn’t just to refresh my paintings and illustrations, but also to provide a more representative example of my sketches; it’s a trip to watch my style coalesce on one page during and since the pandemic (the late teens increasingly seem like a foreign country in that regard). I still wish I could tile the painting page the same way as the graphic and sketch pages, but it now at least registers the original proportions and that’ll have to do until I’m a lot better at WordPress. It actually looks pretty good, especially as it goes along, but I do wish the pages were uniform. Maybe I’ll figure it out one day.
I’m less confident about adding a blog. There’s been discussion about this before, but I’d been toying for a while with the idea of creating a dedicated page to post various scribbles, not unlike my posts for Creative Endeavors. I decided to break my planned artist’s statement into a few separate posts as I kept going off on tangents while writing it (that will likely sound familiar here)—the general lack of group scenes and genre pictures in contemporary art, Instagram’s growing worthlessness, the recently neglected potential of single-image storytelling, etc. These could serve as the basis for a few initial posts until I think of something else.
I still don’t think I have the juice for an actual blog—right now, it’d run out in about five or six entries, I can already tell—but I want to put this stuff somewhere, and I might end up doing a little back and forth with these threads every now and again. I just want to make sure it doesn’t turn into another also-ran from the aughties as it isn’t really intended to be a blog as such. Right now, this is just as well, given that I’m not sure how to combine separate posts into a single searchable component of the header menu; at present, both “posts” are part of the same thread. So we’ll see, but I’ll probably post a few times thereon before the summer gets going.
The header’s simply a shot of the work-in-progress painting I’ve been doing the past few days. I finished a floral watercolor that was pretty lackluster, but I’ve got a good feeling about this one. This is the longest I’ve gone without painting since I started eight years ago and it still feels weird. Incidentally, due to WordPress issues I’m posting this under my “official” identity, which can apparently link to the Avocado (I can’t access my “Paper Chase” Guy account, and if I can do it this way, I’m okay with that if the mods are). Said account’s responsible, too, for http://wendellmckay.com , which I probably should have dropped earlier.
How’s your work going?
