Hmm, how to describe Trigger Happy TV – a British television show celebrating it’s 25th anniversary this week with live shows across the UK – to someone who hasn’t seen it? It was ostensibly a hidden camera ‘prank show’, except that it wasn’t.

Over the course of three seasons show creator Dom Joly performed public non sequitors to the bafflement of passersby: a human snail crawling slowly across a pedestrian crossing, giant pigeons accosting people feeding birds in the park, a snowman throwing a snowball at a woman in an otherwise deserted wintery street. With no studio laughter or commentary it was soundtracked instead often by sad, serious songs completely atonal with the surreal skits.

The skit he remains most famous for however is the Big Phone Man, which was simply a man with a GIANT mobile phone who would answer it in the most inappropriate of places – a museum, a restaurant, a cinema – and talk in the loudest bellow imaginable. This was in the year 2000, when the only mobile phone users were wankers, and the most common Nokia ringtone became intertwined here with a brash dickhead yelling “HELLO?! WHAT?! YEAH!! NAH, IT’S RUBBISH!!! OK CIAO!!!!”
Have a good night and a good morning, everyone!
