Weekly Japanese Pop Culture Thread (July 30, 2025)

Welcome to The Avocado’s weekly discussion of Japanese pop culture! On a recent trip to Chicago I picked up an Anri vinyl simply because I liked the cover, and it was affordable. I always check out the Japanese section in every record store we visit (which is a lot), but I rarely buy anything these days. Most of what I see is the same stuff I’ve been seeing for years, and/or it tends to be very expensive. But this was new to me AND a very reasonable price, so I picked it up. And I’m so glad I did! I didn’t know it at the time, but this is apparently a compilation album from 1982, so it’s a great mix of songs. You might have heard Anri on a city pop collection of some sort, or if you watched Cat’s Eye she’s responsible for the theme song, but she has a ton of music to explore! Here’s one song to get you started:

And, as always…

What have you been watching/reading/playing/eating/listening to lately?

Happy Wednesday! 🍙
