“Brave & Strong” is a track from Sly and the Family Stone’s classic 1971 album There’s a Riot Goin’ On. The follow-up to 1969’s Stand! took nearly two-and-a-half years to be completed, which was an eternity at a time when bands were still routinely releasing an album or more per year. While Riot initially received mixed reviews and was a departure from their previous work both musically and lyrically (featuring a darker, murkier sound and lyrics expressing pessimism and disillusionment), it quickly became both a commercial and critical success – therefore this song might be better known than the one we featured last night. Nonetheless, there are some out there who might only recognize it from being sampled on an album that was considered a disappointment upon release, but has since come to be regarded as another classic of 20th century music.
