Come Along With Me: Adventure Time – “Jake Suit” and “Be More”

BeastMO unleashed

Hyah! That’s right BMO throw that plate at your boy, Finn! Splash that hot tea you were pretending to drink right on those hot dog abs! Finn, keep doing those sweet cartwheels and mash up that doggy bag! Jake uh… just try to ride out there energy, sorry.

Finn and Jake may be brothers but thanks to magical dog logic Jake is way past the explosion of youth that Finn and BMO releasing all over the treehouse like a funky gas that also slaps you in the face. At this time in Jake’s life he’s already met the love of his life and fathered a bunch of pups that are now full-blown adults. Jake often needs convincing to go on an adventure and at this stage he’d prolly much rather chill out with Lady, eat some sassages and play viola.

Jake just can’t compete with their energy

The last time we saw the Jake Suit was way back in season one’s Silent King but in this episode the Jake Suit isn’t used in an adventure, instead it serves as a form of rough housing between the boys. Maybe back in season one Jake would’ve been able to handle this doggy mashing, but the pain is too much and Jake ain’t having it anymore.

mashed up doggy bag

Jake doesn’t accept that the bruises are just “hickeys from the universe” so they attempt to resolve it with an old fashioned Finn vs. Jake tough guy contest. Finn and Jake actually had a “tough guy contest” in season one’s Crystals Have Power where Jake was the one who really knocked the wind out of Finn and he was concerned about overdoing it with his abilities. The tables have turned here except Finn is not very concerned for Jake at all (although he is very encouraging telling Jake it throw it all at him).

Enter Finn Suit?

It’s Jake’s turn to bring the pain! Jake takes the controls on Finn’s body but is unable to do anything really damage with his limited control. More creative measures must be taken and Jake knows pain can take all kinds of forms. From this point forward in the episode we see Jake force Finn into reading a meandering book about dreams, denying him meatloaf, embarrassing him in front of Flame Princess all while we get several references to one of my favourite musicians

Why wouldn’t the name of an incredible Icelandic musician be used as slang in Ooo?

BMO BREAK!

blink and you’d miss it BMO dance
hit us with a moonwalk!

We all know it’s a big deal when someone calls us on our special occasion phone but Jake don’t give a shit and instead sees an opportunity to cause some embarrassment for Finn. Neither of the boys even consider this could have a detrimental effect on Finn and FP’s relationship especially since FP wants Finn to meet her less-evilish family.

no home is complete without a special occasion phone

Thankfully the episode doesn’t go in the boring direction of FP scolding Finn for his childish bun-punching behaviour in front of her family– turns out she’s very much into Finn’s determination! It’s a good thing they’re both kids and special occasions can be jokes to them. FP’s family can’t be all that great anyway if they were okay with her being imprisoned most her life.

Jake visits Lady Rainicorn and tries to brainstorm some fresh ideas for the pain train. TV (voiced by Dan Mintz) gives the suggestion/snark of jumping in a volcano. Up until this point Jake hasn’t inflicted any physical pain on Finn, but yeah sure a volcano works. It’s a minimum tier 8 makeout session with the universe!

Two voiced pups so far and two voice actors from Bob’s Burgers

Jake follows through on his son’s idea and he throws Finn at some fire wolves and gives him a slight dip into the lava. This episode actually does set a precedent for Finn’s extreme pain tolerance. It is also interesting how this final trial revolves around the pain from a burning heat, not unlike the pain he feels when he physically touches Flame Princess. It’s not something I picked up on my first viewing years ago, but due to his relationship with FP there’s probably some complex feelings when it comes to this burning sensation. This will definitely be something to look out for in future episodes.

so majestic

Jake eventually relents and admits to Finn that his bruises really are just “hickeys from the universe”. So it’s a beautiful story about how an aging individual should just suck it up and let the kids roam wild and free all over their doggy bag. Such a story ends the only way it possibly could– in a hospital.

click for cool stuff!

Rare instance of Finn actually reading a book
Squirrel from Up a Tree makes a brief cameo
I just found it amusing that both Finn and FP are committed to this special occasion phone
Finn is just casually standing by as Jake pops out like one of those creepy Xenomorph tongues
Snail shows up early in this one

Another BMO-centric episode and this one might honestly be one of my favourites! However my review as a first time watcher, will be mostly notes taken down in realtime,2 which should be fun for longtime, hardcore AT fans?

According to the title card BMO appears to be alone and backpacking! Hopefully its not another BMO-must-suffer episode 👀

The episode begins with BMO finding & playing around with a box?

OMG is BMO a Metal Gear Solid Fan like me!!! 🤩

Seriously, I didn’t know I needed a BMO-Spy-Action-movie episode till now!

The sillier the better!

Woah! A File directory BMO can access & self-control! Pretty damn impressive. I used to love browsing game directories and game files.3 GooberHunt sounds fun?

BMO.

What are you doing? 😳

Why are you deleting your own files?! 😱

Is this some form of self-harm?

I mean I know hurting oneself can feel good sometimes BMO, in the short term (trust me I know only too well 🙃🥲), but blimey charlie don’t really hurt yourself BMO! 😭

AAAARGH! Not the Coresystemdrivers.sys BMO! 😱

(Sigh) so much for avoiding another BMO-must-suffer episode. I’m surprised that this time BMO was their own worst enemy.

I didn’t expect the episode to hit this deep for me. I know all too well, how it feels to try to avoid answering those questions like “what did you do?” Or pretending you’re “fine.” Although BMO is a little childish, by pulling the old “It wasn’t me. I didn’t do nuthin.” Oh BMO 🙁

🫂

You’ve really done it this time BMO…

Ahh, who am I kidding. I’m literally dealing with health consequences of eating disorders, such as non-purging Bullemia 4 and other issues. I’ve hurt myself to the point where the temple is quite literally burning (if the body is a temple). I’m more of the opinion it’s a prison… or a cage:

Hehe. Could have been the perfect opportunity and pretty funny way, to have this music playing non-diegetically over BMO deleting their own files. Unfortunately YouTube would probably delete it and I don’t have enough time to put together such a video.

I know I know, I say funny, but it’s pretty dark stuff… Still me:

Jesus. Could I get anymore darker. R.I.P Matthew.

Is there an adventure time digging gif?

When Finn offers to take BMO “to the hospital or whatevs,” BMO plays the all too familiar “I’m fine “card 🤦🏾‍♀️:

Looks like I’ve found a version of the ‘it’s fine’ meme.

Kind of crazy how much I have in common with BMO.

Well anyways, thankfully BMO decides to seek help & we discover BMO was born in the badlands. BMO lore heavy episode?

Side note: A nice touch having BMO programmed to go home. I remember having a bad episode at uni once and consequently moving back home (which turned out to be a horrible mistake for me), but it’s still interesting how the human mind reacts to pressures and how that’s ape’d by BMO going “home” (to the MO factory).

The guys make their way to the Badlands & the MO factory, but only MO’s can enter.

JMO is cool!

FMO is kind of ridiculous, but why the need for a total personality wipe?! Why?

Oh, I do like the way MO’s talk in percentages. “47.3% of MO’s eventually return to the factory for assorted sentimental biz. Please step 100% on to the ultratram for your complimentary tour:”

– What did happen to the MO factory?

– lol, did JMO I mean Jake seriously forget his question after asking it… you know what, another case of “I can’t talk” 🤭.

– “Moko5 was founded over 1000 years ago by Master Giovanni.6 A sad & gentle man beloved only by those he built to belove him.” That is pretty sad – also adds to BMO’s pinnochio vibes now that I think about it.

The guys interrupt the tour & try to fix BMO in a room (halfway through the tour) only to struggle to find the right outlet. Security MO’s (SMO’s) show up.

The SMO’s are surprisingly inept. Missing our heroes diving out of the way. Except for the questioning SMO? I guess he puts the SMO’s just above Banana guards in terms of ineptitude, but yeesh… turning around in sync (the way they do), to spot escapees is next level lazy cop work!

The episode really takes a turn, as we follow the security MO’s/goofs. There conversations and behaviours are classic cop drama, but the silly BMO/MO behaviours where eating or drinking essentially hits their screen glass faces, makes the scene silly & hilarious:

Finn & Jake need to act quick though:

Oh my globs, BMO vomiting is awful!

😰

They steal the information they need,* drop down from the SMO’s break room, into another cart with TramMO (or is it DMO?):

Not nice Jake. TramMO was just going his job, but I guess a good womping was needed to get BMO the help desperately needed.
Oops nevermind. Fuck TramMO. Whose somehow managed to catchup in seconds, with the help of the fuzz/SMO’s in tow. Maybe he fell straight into the cart behind?
A fun action sequence. Love that they use a double helix in an episode about fixing a robot.

The guys eventually find the B-Port room** falling through multiple floors.7

They keep falling though missing the B-Port room, but find themselves at the bottom of the factory, in front of an old man called Moe & more MO’s.

Moe (not MO? Giovanni?) the creator of the MO’s.

The Tiny MO bots are very cute!

the walking tiny medical fluid bag bots are too cute & very useful.8

CMO especially!

Look at that little smile 🙂

– Moe created BMO to help his son!

– lol what! Moe didn’t have any kids, because he “never dated any women!?” Wait he’s human? Is this the first other human Finn has met (besides possibly Susan)? But then he did say his “skin is human?!” What does that mean (👀)! Android?

BMO’s heart really is made of gold 💛

“To find a family of his own & maybe even find somebody else’s little boy to take care of.” 🥲 I dunno how anyone could dislike BMO 😭. BMO was made to Be MOre 🥰.

– Lol, a finally reactivated & fixed BMO to Moe: “Grandpoop?”

Moe: “nope just poop.”
Awwww. Hugs between father & child.

The episode ends on one of cutest/sweetest moments:9

Oh my globs! BMO & family saying hello.

Stray thoughts

– Lol, “Tears in the oven” works surprisingly well too. Another coincidental similarity between me & BMO. I love to use the “tears in rain” quote from Bladerunner all the time too.10 Although I suppose BMO has more in common with a replicant/robot than I do. Interesting and thoughtful flex from the showrunners. There’s a lot more going on beneath the cute/sweet surface of this episode than I think people may perceive, but I’m interested to read others thoughts.

Love the MO Factory Designs
And whom, pray tell has not woken up like this!

* “Goofing” in AT:

Wouldn’t be a BMO epiosde without some innuendo 😉

** B-Port room:

Do I even wanna know what’s going on with the bulge 😅

I mean seriously who doesn’t wanna see BMO happy.
