Mornin’ Politocadoes!
The US Presidential election is days away now and I think we’re all beginning to feel it. Everyone feels the exhaustion. Democratic voters are experiencing a general sense of unease. By now, the MAGA crowd has already drunk the Haterade that energizes them. So it should come as no surprise then that we have arrived at a place of name-calling and insult hurling.
It all began on Sunday with Trump’s Madison Square Garden Rally and comedian Tony Hinchcliffe. The comedian, known for his work at celebrity roasts, called Puerto Rico an island of garbage floating in the sea. This did many things. 1. It pissed off Puerto Ricans all over the country, 2. It energized the Democrats and 3. It forced Republicans into damage control mode. Pennsylvania is one of the key states in play for the election. It has a population of at least 300,000 people of Puerto Rican descent. Biden only took Pennsylvania by 80,000 in 2020. It’s important to avoid directly offending a pool of voters that could swing the election.
Naturally, they took the L and genuinely apologized. Nah, nah, of course not. They threw Hinchcliffe under the bus and Trump claimed he had no idea who he was.
In any case, what followed was the Democrats capitalizing on the situation. The Harris Campaign quickly put together an attack ad. They wrote new fundraising e-mails and threats. But then Diamond Joe had something to say. Biden was having a video call with Voto Latino. During the call, he said something that sounded an awful lot like Trump’s supporters were garbage. This turned out to not be true. The White House issued a transcript quickly that made it clear that Biden’s words were actually
The only garbage I see floating out there is his [supporters/supporter’s]–his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American
That didn’t matter, of course. Being the crybullies that they are, the Right Wing was quick to make everything about Biden’s gaffe. In fact, Trump was so taken by it that he dressed up as the Trash Man for his rally.
Well, not exactly like that, but I’m sure you get the picture.
He showed up in a garbage truck and gave a speech dressed in an orange safety vest with a bronzer-induced tan so dark that it would make Jynx and Mr. Popo seem solemn and dignified.
The effort to equivocate the two situations doesn’t seem to have been as successful as he would like. Proudly proclaiming yourself to be garbage doesn’t quite hit the same as proudly owning the “Deplorable” label. Not as sexy, deplorable has more syllables. But we’ll have to see. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the Puerto Rico remark caused even Latinos who already voted for him to regret their decision. You’d think all of the other things he plans to do would’ve already done that, but here we are.
In any case, today is Halloween. The veil between the living and the dead is thin, spirits roam the world, children wear costumes and eat candy, adults wear costumes eat candy and might drink. We all ask of ourselves to be something different today. It is a time of transition. Enjoy this night, because come next week we’ll learn whether we got a Trick or a Treat.

Even if you are vaccinated, please continue to maintain social distancing measures in accordance with current CDC guidelines. Also, according to recent polls approximately 50% of adults are not planning on getting their Covid-19 boosters. So please get them and older adults should also look to be vaccinated for RSV!
