I was sick much of the past week—“just” a severe cold, not Covid or flu, but while it could have been a lot worse (I think my body’s getting used again to being just “regular” sick), it sapped a lot of creative energy and I didn’t really get anything done until halfway through the weekend. When I came right, though, things turned out better than expected; I was able to get the header illustration—Eyelash Melee, loosely based on Pearl’s Billy and Social Club in Bushwick (where I had a couple of beers during my New York visit right before hearing Habibi live)—finished and I started pencil work on the grid transfer painting I’ve been meaning to do for years.
Did a lot of thinking during my shift Sunday (partly to ignore the obnoxious load with which my manager had saddled me) and realized a number of different paths I could take with the aforementioned project. I’ve been experimenting with printing illustrations just in case I might be in a position to do it to order one day, and it hit me that not only could I vary the size and intensity, to some extent, but that I could also edit them on my iPad with Autodesk Sketchbook (admittedly through the mildly tortuous routine of emailing them to myself), not only with paint tools but also with ink. So… that’s probably gonna take up a lot of time, but I’ve been looking for specific artistic resolutions to kick off my fifties and it could be a great way to spend some of the longer stretches coming up in Thanksgiving (said fifties begin the Monday preceding and I’ll probably have more than a little downtime at my parents’ houses in the Old Country over the weekend).
How’s your work going?
