This week’s discussion prompt comes courtesy of The Avocado’s very own Jason P:
What are some bands/artists whose debut album has a very different sound/style from what the band/artist ended up becoming known for?
While Little Earthquakes (1992) was Tori Amos’ solo debut album, prior to that Amos was the lead singer and principal songwriter of a band called Y Kant Tori Read. Their sole, self-titled album (released in 1988), which is stylistically categorized as “synth pop”, “new wave”, and “hard rock” (well, according to Wikipedia anyway), is very different from the music that Amos would go on to make and become revered for in the years that followed. The album was a commercial failure, and the band broke up soon after; while Amos effectively disowned the album for many years (at one point quoted as saying, “The only good thing about that album is my ankle high boots”), producer Joe Chiccarelli has said that she was happy with it at the time. However, in 2017 Amos said she had finally “made peace” with the album, and subsequently after long being out of print, it was finally released on digital and streaming services for the first time, as well as receiving a limited-edition physical release on CD and vinyl.
As always, any and all music-related posts are welcome. Have fun, and rock out with yr guac out!
