Alright, let’s start with the good news. Our number one movie—yet again—is Deadpool and Wolverine. From the moment it was announced, this was a surefire hit, and fortunately, Disney delivered on what they promised. Fans are absolutely loving this one, with strong repeat business, helping it slice up $54 million for its third weekend. It has now brought in a colossal total of $494 million. $600 million is certainly within its reach. Worldwide, it’s even better, as D&W is now only the second R-rated outing to cross $1 billion after Joker, and in case you’re wondering, yes, it is going to beat that too.
Moving on, we have It Ends With Us. For my money, this movie looked terrible, but clearly it has a Lively audience, as it premiered to…$50 million??? What?? I had never even heard of this book or “BookTok sensation” author Colleen Hoover before this summer. Am I so out of touch? No. It’s the children who are wrong.
And speaking of “wrong,” that’s sadly the only word we can use for Borderlands, which made only $8 against a budget upwards of $100 million. Oh, and this somehow gets worse. Did you see those reviews? Did you hear about that “D+” CinemaScore? I knew that Lionsgate had no idea what they were trying to sell when they attached a trailer for an adaptation of an M-rated video game to Inside Out 2. Go figure that I still think that Borderlands looks kind of fun, but then again, I’m someone who willingly paid money to go to The Watchers, so what do I know? Next up for Lionsgate is The Crow remake in two weeks, and somehow I doubt they’re going to be popping any champagne over that.
Our other newcomer is Cuckoo. The heartbreaking drama about Sonny being cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs hurting himself and everyone around him made $3 million. For any other studio, this would be dismal, but Neon knows how to bring in a profit (also I’d imagine Longlegs is going to be able to pay all their bills for the remainder of the year).
Next weekend brings us Alien: Romulus. Some are claiming this could open to as much as $50 million, but I would personally be shocked if that happens. Also, Ryan’s World: The Movie exists for some reason, which means I’ll be talking about that.
Anyway, the top ten, via The Numbers
