This week, the newest Mission: Impossible film is hitting theaters. Once again, Tom Cruise will do insane stunts for our pleasure. He’s hung off a wire from the roof, climbed the Burj Khalifa, and filmed himself doing a HALO jump. What new death-defying feat does he have in store for us next?

Cruise has had an interesting career that seems to be defined by different eras. When he first appeared on the scene, he was the dreamy hunk in Top Gun and Risky Business. Then, in the 90’s, he seemed to be trying to get Oscar glory. He would star in films directed by Cameron Crowe, Stanley Kubrick, Paul Thomas Anderson, Edward Zwick, and Stephen Spielberg. Lately, he’s become known for being an action star doing stunts that you’d be worried about a man his age doing.

But then, when you think you have him figured out, he throws you a curveball. For example, who saw him playing LeStat with a campy relish in Interview With The Vampire? He disappears under a mountain of latex and busts a move as Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder. He also plays against type as the lead in Edge of Tomorrow as a coward who hates conflict who learns to be a badass.

He’s sometimes hard to pin down. Is a good actor? Or is a bad actor coasting on his celebrity and good looks?

According to IMDB, Cruise has 46 acting credits, many of which he has played a lead actor.

Today’s bonus prompt: what is your favorite Tom Cruise performance?
