So long, long ago, in a galaxy right here, visionary director Zack Snyder wrote a script that would have been a Star Wars film set away from the Skywalker Saga. This was all scrapped after Lucasfilm was sold to Disney.
But somehow, the Zack Snyder script returned. And it’s now with wholly original characters (do not steal!) in a film now entitled Rebel Moon.
Rebel Moon is just one such fine film making a debut in 2023. It’s a big year for continuing franchises. The latest Guardians of the Galaxy and Fast and Furious movies debut, Willy Wonka gets young, David Gordon Green takes on the Exorcist franchise, and Magic Mike dances his last dance. The DCEU goes full throttle with new films for Shazam!, The Flash, and Aquaman. And two franchises who we though were concluded — Transformers and The Hunger Games — roar back in 2023.
In one of the stranger pairings, Greta Gerwig directs Barbie from a screenplay by Noah Baumbach. M. Night Shayamalan directs Knock at the Cabin, a post-apocalyptic horror movie starring Dave Bautista. Taika Waititi turns his attention to sports comedies with Next Goal Wins. Chris Nolan tells the real life story of the atom bomb with Oppenheimer.
If movies seemed to come out like a trickle in 2022, 2023 is when they turned on the fire hose.
