One of the things that I was introduced to early on that really clicked for me was the “concept album” release. Essentially, a release that was telling a story across all of its songs. These aren’t all that common overall, especially in the modern day, but when I was “discovering” music and the kinds of works that appeal to me, this area was one that I got into and in some ways helped me ease into musicals a bit more than I might have otherwise.
There are, obviously, some big ones over the years that tend to garner the most attention like The Wall and 2112, both of which I really enjoyed introducing to my kids. But there are a lot of lesser known ones that might be some new discoveries for people here.
For me, the one that sticks the most at this point is the Outside release from David Bowie, though his final release comes damn close if I could bring myself to listen to it again without falling apart.
Bonus Question: Which concept album didn’t click for you?
