Mechagodzilla is a mechanical doppelganger of Godzilla first seen in the “Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974)”. Created by aliens from the third planet around a black hole, Mechagodzilla was initially disguised as Godzilla until revealed as a metal monster and defeated by the combined forces of Godzilla and King Caesar. It returned in the next movie “Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975)” teaming up with Titanosaurus but still being defeated by Godzilla. The design was inspired by the popularity of giant mechas in Japanese media at the time and Mechagodzilla has proved a popular character, appearing in many more Godzilla films. Initially an enemy of Japan, in later films Mechagodzilla was a superweapon created by the JSDF to fight Godzilla, fitting with the post-Showa narrative of a powerful assertive Japan building their own weapons to fight off global threats. I still love the classic design best.
It possesses a huge variety of weapons and the ability to fly, though somewhat unconvincingly. The choreographer said they based Mechagodzilla’s movements off those of a armor clad European knight. I love this shiny boi and I hope you do too!
