Jeopardy! recap for Tue., Feb. 4

Introducing today’s contestants:

– Nipun, an investment analyst from New York, bunched his classes into two days a week so he could travel;
– Kathryn; an accounting student from Michigan, was bitten by an iguana (but no lizard powers yet); and
– Travis, a management consultant from Pennsylvania, made room for Barack Obama at a parade. Travis entered the game as a one-day champ with winnings of $14,801.

Very low-scoring affair in which all three DDs were missed and Nipun climbed out of the red to lead into FJ with $5,200 vs. $5,000 for champ Travis and $2,400 for Kathryn.

DD1, $1,000 – WHERE DOES IT HURT? – Myalgia (these parts) (Kathryn lost the table limit of $1,000.)

DD2, $1,200 – ADMIRABLE ADMIRALS – On July 30, 1588 Admiral Howard left this city’s harbor to meet the armada; 32 years later, another ship set sail from there (Nipun dropped from first to third by losing $3,000 from his score of $4,200.)

DD3, $2,000 – APOSTOLIC NAMES – The Spanish Diego is the equivalent to this apostolic name (Kathryn lost $2,000 on a true DD.)

FJ – WORLD MAMMALS – A drawing of it by John Hunter, naturalist and Governor of New South Wales, published in 1802 labels it ornithorhyncus paradoxus

Once again, only Travis was correct on FJ, adding $201 to win with $5,201 for a two-day total of $20,002. This was also the second straight game in which Travis chose to defend against the remote possibility the leader would bet $0, and by doing so gave the third-place player a chance to pass him if he had missed.

That’s before our time: No one knew the name of Jackie Gleason’s bus driver character Ralph Kramden, or the “City” that was the setting of “Gunsmoke”, Dodge City.

Vocabulary vexations: The players couldn’t come up with the word for a winemaker (vintner) or the body part impacted by hepatalgia (liver).

Correct Qs:
DD1 – What are muscles?
DD2 – What is Plymouth?
DD3 – What is James?
FJ – What is the platypus?
