This week’s discussion prompt: What are some of the first songs you remember really liking?

When I was seven years old, I asked for and got a tape recorder for my birthday. It had a single speaker and a built-in mic, nothing fancy. I mostly used it at first to record the sound of my own voice and my family, as well as snippets of stuff off of TV. But I also used it to record “Ghostbusters” by Ray Parker Jr. and the first side of Sports by Huey Lewis and the News off of my parents’ records by leaning the tape recorder up against one of the speakers on their stereo, and then telling everyone in the house to be quiet.

Played that tape with those five songs so many times that I still know them by heart. Thing is, I never got around to listening to side 2 of Sports until just a couple years ago. And even though they were on the same tape and I listened to them in close succession all the time, I never picked up on the similarities between “Ghostbusters” and “I Want a New Drug” either.

I ain’t afraid of no ghosts.

I ain’t afraid of no bed.

I ain’t afraid of no lawsuit.

Of course, any and all music-related topics are welcome. Have fun and as always: rock out with yr guac out!
