Weekly Japanese Pop Culture Thread (January 8th, 2020)

The winter anime season is almost upon us, so it’s time for a quick preview. For a full list of what’s on offer, AniChart has got you covered.

This season has some continuations, most notably Chihayafuru, My Hero Academia, and RADIANT. But let’s talk about some new stuff, shall we? Here’s what I’m planning on checking out:

  • ID: INVADED. It’s difficult to know exactly what this show is about, but it seems to be a deconstruction of detective fiction and the locked-room mystery genre.
  • Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! This looks kind of like Shirobako filtered through Masaaki Yuasa’s twisted mind, and I couldn’t be more excited. It has been receiving rapturous pre-air reviews, so this seems like a must-watch.
  • pet. It’s essentially anime Inception. That could go either way.
  • Somali and the Forest Spirit. A mysterious little girl latches onto a magical golem as a father figure. This looks like a cute show with incredible world design, and it’s got some positive buzz. Let’s hope it delivers.
