Welcome to the Circus – Judiciary Committee Hearings Day 1

Today, the House Judiciary Committee begins its hearings into the impeachment of Donald Trump, following the Intelligence Committee’s hearings which ended two weeks ago, and one day after the Intelligence Committee submitted its report. The hearings will begin at 10 A.M. Eastern Time.

I have been informed that Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler has a lot less power than Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff. This means that we are going to see a lot more obstruction and distraction from Republicans than before (a tall order, to be sure) – in short, it’s expected to be a circus.

Today the Committee will hear from four experts on Consitutional Law. From the PBS Newshour summary by Yasmeen Alamiri:

“The Wednesday hearing is slated to examine the premise of “high crimes and misdemeanors” through testimony from 4 scholars and experts. The House Judiciary Committee released the names of the experts: Noah Feldman, Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law and Director, Julis-Rabinowitz Program on Jewish and Israeli Law at Harvard Law School; Pamela S. Karlan, Kenneth and Harle Montgomery Professor of Public Interest Law and Co-Director, Supreme Court Litigation Clinic at Stanford Law School; Michael Gerhardt, Burton Craige Distinguished Professor of Jurisprudence at The University of North Carolina School of Law; Jonathan Turley, J.B. and Maurice C. Shapiro Professor of Public Interest Law at The George Washington University Law School. “
