Comic Book Review – Ghost Spider #2

Gwen Stacy’s first day of college is the highlight of Ghost Spider #2 brought to you by the team of Seanan McGuire and Takeshi Miyazawa.

Before Gwen leaves for school, her father tells her the unfortunate news of Man-Wolf being released from police custody. As she slams her fist through the granite countertop in anger, her dad consoles her and says that he will keep tabs on the gang leader.

Gwen barely makes it to her first class on time thanks to her new classmate Kosei. Kosei asks Gwen to lunch but she must decline due to her class schedule. Gwen asks for his phone number just before the class begins.

Unbeknownst to Gwen, Professor Guarinus (really Miles Warren) has been watching her since she arrived on campus. He hopes to turn Gwen into the Bride of the Jackal.

Gwen’s next class is Media Studies. Her homework assignment is to watch the first season of Veronica Mars and compare it to classic film noir. A fellow student named Benji from Melbourne, Australia invites Gwen to watch the TV series together that evening. Gwen accepts the invitation just before leaving to go to her final class of the day, Bioethics with TA Peter Parker. Peter asks Gwen how her first day of school was and she says its been great after making some new friends.

Gwen travels back to Earth-65 and calls her father. He asks how her day was, but the conversation quickly turns to the whereabouts of Man-Wolf. Mr. Stacy tells Gwen he hasn’t been seen and is probably in hiding. Gwen tells her dad that she stopped two of Man-Wolf’s gang members from mugging a couple who got lost trying to find a restaurant. Gwen informs her dad where the criminals are so they can be picked up and taken into custody.

As Gwen goes to meet Benji for their scheduled meetup, it’s revealed that Benji is speaking to Miles Warren. She has befriended Gwen just like Miles asked her to do. If Benji provides Miles with information on who and where Gwen comes from, he will reward Benji handsomely.

This issue, we see Gwen trying to balance her time between worlds. Gwen was conflicted on either going to school or staying home to track down Man-Wolf. I mentioned in my earlier review of Issue 1 that balancing her career as a superhero and a student would be tough. It’s only going to get tougher with the looming threat of the Jackal on the horizon. Can Gwen figure out Benji’s machinations before it’s too late?

Next issue – WORLDS COLLIDE! Gwen Stacy of Earth-65 has decided to enroll in class at Empire State University in the Marvel Universe! Now, she’ll be taking classes down the hall from Peter Parker, your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man! But things aren’t as safe as they may seem. Peter is not the only person in the Marvel Universe who may recognize Gwen Stacy, and not all of them share his noble intentions…
