The Thursday Politics Thread Repeats The Question

Morning Politocadoes,

Soooo Wednesday saw the testimony of one Robert Swan Mueller III before the House subcommittees on Intelligence and Justice respectively on the subject of the Russian attack on the 2016 election and the actions of the desperate criminals for whom  it benefited.

Displaying what the kids call ‘zero chill’ Trump screamed and blamed everyone he could think of in that bowl of mush he calls a brain on twitter. He fired off tweets that blamed Comey, the Democrats, Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, Andrew McCabe, Fusion GPS and those buttery mails from early in the morning into well into the evening. Even going so far as to hold a press conference on the South Lawn. Funny how often innocent people scream and blame everyone when they’ve been totally exonnerated.

But for all of the sturm and drang, Mueller’s testimony was much like the man, button-lipped and almost obscenely straight-laced. He had said from the outset that he wasn’t going to deviate from his report and true to his word that is what he did. For some reason, everyone kinda expected him to break or something. But he didn’t.

Dude’s Joe Friday.

joefriday

As irritating as that can be.

Yes, he didn’t answer any questions he didn’t want to answer, nor was he wont to speculate on certain topics. The Democrats and Republicans both more than a little frustrated that they couldn’t get more out of him. At one point, Ted Lieu thought he had gotten Mueller to agree that the reason he did not indict Trump was because of DOJ policy. Mueller retracted the statement because he wanted to stand by the conclusion in the report that the team did not make a decision about indictments because of DOJ policy not that he would have if the policy had been in place. Lordy, that’s some hair splitting for the sake of propriety.

But the Democrats, both in the House Judiciary and Intelligence hearings, essentially got him to reiterate his findings straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak. Through a series of yes or no questions, they laid out the case for obstruction of justice crimes that were already in the report. The strategy perhaps being to get the American people to pay attention by hearing it from the man himself. The only catch being that the man is 75 years old and has spent the better part of his life assiduously avoiding the spotlight.

People weren’t entirely pleased with his performance. He repeatedly asked to have a question repeated, he tripped over words, and often had trouble finding the congressperson asking the questions. Altogether, not entirely inspiring. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt, but Michael Moore sure as hell didn’t, trashing the Special Prosecutor in a twitter meltdown that drove some clicks on Breitbart, I’m sure.

(But I still like Bowling For Columbine)

Anyway, the Republicans were completely looney tunes in their questioning. Doug Collins, who thought he could read the report literally and moonlogic away the damning behavior of the Trump Campaign. There was Louie Gohmert, a man who might in fact be a simple HyperChicken from a backwoods asteroid, and Devin Nunes.

Ah Devin.

You sentient bag of human flop sweat. Devin of the Midnight Uber Ride. Devin whomst has sued a Cow on Twitter. You sweet, stupid traitor. Devin tried to frame the Democrats as the true colluders with Russia. All to put Donald Trump in the White House skeptical question marks??

Like I can’t really blame Mueller for sometimes not quite having the words to say in response to what I can only describe as shenanigans.

In any case, I thought it did a good job laying out a case for impeachment. While he would never quite say it, that is what his report was. And his testimony is that the report speaks for itself. The Special Counsel can’t charge a sitting President were indictments brought but Congress has tools at its disposal to do something about it. if they so chose. And I think with more of this laid bare, impeachment has a chance to gain more traction.

Impeach the Crime President!

Welcome to Thursday! Please be excellent to each other! The Mayor McSquirrel Rule is in effect because we’re better than him. If you notice a news item being posted too often, alert a mod so it can be pinned to the top of the thread.
