Welcome! The purpose of this thread is to talk about all things related to the wonderful world of musical theatre. Each week (or so) I will post a thread with a topic/question for everyone to respond to. This is also a great place to mention any new musicals you’ve discovered and/or general recommendations for other musical fans. Heard/seen any good shows lately? Have any theatre news to share? Tell us about it!
In the wonderful world of musical theatre there are many different types. Since starting this thread I’ve asked you to share your favorites in various categories and subgenres, so now I figured we could just talk about which type of musical is our favorite. Do you prefer comedies? Tragic romances? Historical musicals? Do you love jukebox musicals? Quiet shows about everyday life? Do you even have a preferred type? I feel like I’m all over the map. I never know what I’m going to like until I actually hear it/see it, so I try to remain pretty open about all musicals. If I had to say what I prefer, I’d probably say “shows with heart”. I realize that’s pretty vague, but to me that means something that has a lot of sincere affection for the subject matter. It’s why I love musicals about art, love, friendship, persevering, etc. I’ve written about this a lot in the past, but I really love how listening to musicals can transport me into the story and give me a world to inhabit while I’m listening. Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone and The Prom) seems to understand that better than most, so I’m not surprised to have fallen in love with The Prom. Give me sincere emotions and a story about persevering in a musical and I’ll probably be a fan.
What about you? Are there certain kinds of musicals that you prefer? What’s your favorite type of musical?
