Hello! Welcome to the second album in the Avocado Music Club. Some set up, again: These are different than Album Spotlights which are great and people put a lot of effort into. I won’t be putting a lot of effort into the body of these because I hate writing and don’t want to put my own opinion in them. The goal with these will be to, hopefully, have people listen to them ahead of time and be interested in discussing the album – including, in the future, recommendations they may not have otherwise listened to and engaged with. From the initial recommendations, let’s listen and talk about:
The Handsome Family‘s Singing Bones
Released in 2003, it is the Chicago band’s sixth album. I know absolutely nothing of this album ahead of time, other than Andrew Bird may have covered a few of the songs.
Track Listing:
- The Forgotten Lake
- Gail with the Golden Hair
- 24-Hour Store
- The Bottomless Hole
- Far from Any Road
- If the World Should End in Fire
- A Shadow Underneath
- Dry Bones
- Fallen Peaches
- Whitehaven
- Sleepy
- The Song of a Hundred Toads
- If the World Should End in Ice
So, come talk about this album. Is it great/good/bad? Does it mean anything? Favorite parts/lyrics? How does it hold up? What are its influences? Has it influenced anything? How does it compare with the rest of the year’s music? Talk about anything, even if it’s (politely) negative, have fun!
