Comic Book Review – Old Man Quill #2 (Of 12)

Old Man Quill #2 (of 12)

Writer – Ethan Sacks

Artist – Robert Gill

Recap – “Peter Quill – born on Earth to a human mother and alien father – set out for a life of adventure among the stars as Star-Lord. He became a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy and spent years fighting and defending with the ragtag group of misfits. Eventually, life took him down a new path. Peter took over from his father as emperor of the planet Spartax, chose responsibility over the swashbuckling antics of his past, started a family, and had a falling out with the Guardians. But that was a long time ago. When his strategic miscalculation left his planet undefended, Peter found Spartax destroyed and no one to blame but himself. Living in self-imposed exile for decades, Peter has been unable to spur himself to any kind of action except days spent drinking to forget when he can’t stay in cryo-sleep. But then the estranged surviving Guardians reached out to him and pulled him into one last mission – and chance for redemption: return to Earth in an attempt to stop the Universal Church of Truth, the same group that destroyed Spartax. Only Earth’s had a rough time since Peter’s last seen it. The supervillains organized 45 years ago under Red Skull and took over, and now the remaining Wastelands may be in dire need of some super heroics.”

“In the Court of the Crimson King”

In New Latveria (formerly New York City) Dr. Doom is handing out food to the populace. A man in the crowd screams out “It’s Clobberin’ Time” and throws a Molotov cocktail at Dr. Doom. It is revealed that Dr. Doom is really a Doombot and the automaton begins to malfunction, firing energy beams that kill the man and hurt others in the crowd.

One of Dr. Doom’s foot soldiers reports what happened at the event to Dr. Doom and Madame Masque. There are rumors of someone calling themselves “The Avenger” who is rallying people to rebel against Dr. Doom. The soldier also reports on a ship that crash-landed in the Wastelands. Dr. Doom is not worried by this predicament because if anyone did survive the crash, they won’t survive the horrors of the Wastelands.

In Horse Creek, Wyoming The Wrecking Crew gathers the townspeople looking for their tributes to offer Dr. Doom. The people come emptyhanded and The Wrecker, crowbar in hand, is going to teach them all a lesson in respect. As the Wrecker is about to dole out punishment with his trusty weapon, it’s caught by Drax. The Guardians and the Wrecking Crew tussle. The only survivor of the crew is Piledriver, who grabs a little girl and holds her hostage. He tells everyone to stay away or else she will be hurt. Peter assesses the situation and shoots Piledriver in the neck with his blaster, killing the villain and saving the girl.

In space, the Shi’ar Imperial Guard have tracked the Milano’s flight path to the Sol system. Gladiator reviews security footage from the S.W.O.R.D. satellite and sees Peter is back in action. The Imperial Guard heads to Earth to find and stop Peter and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

It will only be a matter of time before the Guardians of the Galaxy make their way to New Latveria and have a face to face showdown with Emperor Doom. The man who stood up to Dr. Doom is probably Ben Grimm, as the man was wearing a Fantastic Four uniform shirt. How he was transformed from the Thing back to Ben Grimm is a mystery. Another mystery is who “the Avenger” is and what their plan is to dethrone Dr. Doom.  Are any other heroes alive? Which villains will the Guardians of the Galaxy encounter next? Face front, True Believers, these questions will be answered over the course of the miniseries event.
