Morning Politocadoes!
One of the things I’ve been looking forward to for a while now, is the Democrats gaining control of the House committees and subcommittees because of the hearings that they can now call. We’ve just recently had the first House hearing on gun control in a decade, for example. Ways and Means is examining presidential tax returns, and the House Homeland Security Committee may subpoena DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen over family separation. Things that the Republican party considered anathema to their agenda are suddenly back on the table. But the one I’m most excited to seeing back in the hands of the Democrats is the House Committee on Intelligence, now chaired by Adam Schiff.
Trump lashes out as Democrats step up inquiries of president and administration
Investigations into Russian influence on the 2016 election had been scuttled earlier in 2018 by the Republicans on that committee. Led at the time by Rep. Devin Nunes, he of the Midnight Uber Ride to the White House, the Republicans on the committee released a report, rightly judged by most to containing numerous glaring factual errors and omissions, that effectively scuttled the investigation last year. But that ends now.
With Schiff at the helm, the investigation has resumed. The first order of business was to vote to send all transcripts of witnesses who came before the committee on the matter to the office of the Special Counsel, making perjury charges suddenly possible. Oer 50 witnesses testified before the committee up to and including luminaries such as Don Jr., Brad Parscale, Ex-Congressman (R-Moscow) Dana Rohrabacher and everyone’s Best Boy, Jared Kushner Boy Adventurer.
The investigation’s parameters are wide, but familiar to anyone who’s been watching. It will look at the Russian intervention in the 2016 presidential election, the “extent of any links and/or coordination” between Russians and Trump’s associates, whether foreign actors attempted to exert influence over Trump or his family and associates, and perhaps most importantly, whether anyone has sought to obstruct any of the relevant investigations, and that includes “those in the Congress.”
