Jeopardy! recap for Thur., Jan. 24

Jeopardy! recap for Thur., Jan. 24 – Let’s meet today’s contestants:

– Nancy, a sales manager from Illinois, whose DNA test explains why she wants to club stuff;
– Aaron, a marketer from Maryland, held the record for visiting bars in one day; and
– Rachel, an astrophysicist from California, went to the opening of the new Yankee Stadium with her dad. Rachel is a one-day champ with winnings of $29,600.

It was rough sledding in the latter part of DJ, especially for Rachel, who dropped to $0 on DD3 and wound up $1,600 in the red. Meanwhile, Nancy managed to avoid a runaway with $7,200 going into FJ vs. $12,400 for Aaron.

DD1 ($600) – CREATURES WITH BLOWHOLES – Monodon monoceros, it has to navigate Arctic ice so it can get air into its blowhole (Aaron lost $1,200)

DD2 ($1,200) – SLOGANS & MOTTOES – Yale’s motto “Lux et Veritas” means this (Nancy lost $2,000)

DD3 ($800) – POTENT POE TALES – This Poe story’s title is realized as the narrator flees the “House” as it cracks & is torn asunder (Rachel lost $3,600 on a true DD.)

FJ – U.K. PRIME MINISTERS – He was the first U.K. Prime Minister born after Elizabeth II became queen

Both players were correct on FJ, with Aaron adding $2,001 to win with $14,401.

Triple Stumpers of the day: The players couldn’t identify a picture of a “notoriously vocal” humpback whale, or knew that one that can live in “Atlanta & Atlantis” like a toad is amphibious.

This day in Trebekistan: Alex described the FJ category as sounding “like an easy, but perhaps tough category”. My interpretation is he was inadvertently telling us that the clue was easy before backtracking.

Correct Qs:
DD1 – What is a narwhal?
DD2 – What is “Light and Truth”?
DD3 – What is “The Fall of the House of Usher”?
FJ – Who is Tony Blair?
