This week’s prompt: Soundtracks
TheImmortanScott’s third annual Sight And Sound poll of the Avocado’s favorite movies got me thinking about soundtracks. I think most of my favorite movies have music as a vital part of the overall production. So tell us some of your favorite soundtracks. What makes a good soundtrack? Can a soundtrack transport you back to the theater or time when you first saw the movie? Do you like soundtracks that are songs heard during the film, or do you prefer recordings of the original music composed for the film?
Here at Moon! Base Alpha, we have a mix of both. My favorite cinematic score is Wendy Carlos’ Tron. That movie was catnip to a nerdy, 12 year old Moon! obsessed with the Atari 800 and the space age sounds of Gary Numan and Michael Iceberg. The record survived countless moves across the state of Florida and across the country to Washington. It’s scratched like a 20-dimensional lenticular photo and has been replaced with a remastered version. Most of our records have come and gone, but this one has been with me for 35 years. My favorite, uh, songtrack if you will, is The Big Lebowski. Not the official, compromised second draft. That only has 14 songs and not one is from Creedence! I have a fan made disc that has all the music from the movie including the Creedence and even the Branded theme. Mrs. Moon! stans for Xanadu. The soundtrack transports her back to being the coolest girl in the 4th grade because she was the one that brought the soundtrack in for roller skatin’ time. And she loves the heck out of this wonderful, terrible movie too. It transports her into her childhood happy place, singing with Olivia and dancing with Gene Kelly.
How ’bout y’all? Drop some movie music love and share what else is tickling your earballs. And as always, rock out with yr guac out!
